Los Angeles, CA –October 9, 2006– Loyola Marymount University, voted in 2006 the “Hottest for Hispanic” by Kaplan/Newsweek, has appointed Martha C. de la Torre to serve a three-year term on its Board of Regents.
Martha’s involvement with Loyola Marymount University began 30 years ago when she was accepted as a freshman, the first in her family to attend a four-year university program. After graduating in 1978 with a bachelor of science in accounting, Martha became a CPA and audit manager while working at Ernst & Young. A few years later she founded El Clasificado, a publication whose mission is to create bridges that strengthen and empower the Hispanic community. Working with the Hispanic community for many years increased Martha’s awareness of how important education is for young Latinos, and in 2000, Martha decided to become more involved with her alma mater as a member of the MAAA (Mexican American Alumni Association) Board of Directors. Over the past 25 years LMU’s MAAA has awarded over $1.5 million in scholarships.
Martha serves on the board of Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic, Los Angeles County Education Foundation, Don Bosco Technical Institute and LMU’s MAAA. In 2006, Hispanic Magazine awarded Martha with the highly coveted Entrepreneur Award. Other accolades include: Hispanic Business Woman of the Year by U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, finalist as Entrepreneur of the Year sponsored by Ernst & Young and Small Business Person of the Year presented by the SBA.
“I am proud to be a Loyola Marymount Alumnus and am grateful for the education, the business as well as life skills I learned at LMU that have been the underlying foundation of my entrepreneurial success. It is a university where character, ethics and moral standards are embodied within academic challenges. Through my role as Regent to the University, I look forward to helping Loyola Marymount extend its bridges of opportunities into the local community of Los Angeles,” states Martha.

El Clasificado, a Hispanic Business 500 company, is the largest Spanish-language classified free weekly publication in the United States, and Al Borde is a bi-weekly alternative entertainment guide for the young Hispanic community. In 2006, the company launched new Hispanic media solutions for advertisers, including websites, events and mobile services.
